Our Peru trip is getting better by the day! Ok, excluding yesterday. Took a bus from Arequipa to Puno with our new travel friend Sofie from Sweden. Rewarding trip with the bus taking winding roads up into the Andes, first offering beautiful views of Arequipa and its surrounding volcanoes, and later of rough high mountains, grazing alpacas and more mountain lakes with flamingos. Until we reached the Altiplano plateau where landscapes got a bit repetitive, and even depressing when arriving Puno as the city is rather ugly at first sight.
In Puno unfortunately altitude sickness struck and left us all with impressive headaches, so we took it easy for the rest of the day (how come I feel fine at 4,900m but get sick at 3,800m???). This morning things were back to normal and we took a boat out to the Uros Islands and Taquile Island in Lake Titicaca. The Uros Islands are built out of reef and literally float on the water, while Taquile is a natural island that has been inhabited for thousands of years. Discovering the islands and meeting the local Indians was quite an experience, and throughout most of the trip seemingly endless blue skies with great cloud formations spanned the lake. Really beautiful. Even though I would hate to be an Indian out on those islands that get invaded by boatloads of visitors every day who try to take pictures of everything. Will upload mine in January :-)
Tomorrow morning we'll say goodbye to Puno and the lake and head up to Cusco, from where we'll start our Machu Picchu adventure!
